Stranded Whale Engraving

This print is an icon of whaling art. It depicts a stranded sperm whale on the shore which was drawn from life by J. Matham in 1598. The engraving was made by Willen Van Der Gouwen c. 1650 from the original drawing. It was titled "Stranded Whale Between Scheveningen and Katwyk". It was a major event in the late sixteenth century Netherlands and is well recorded in other accounts. This engraving shows various members of society examining the carcas, measuring and cutting out pieces. Tents are set up in the background. It was recorded that the whale "exploded" later in the week, most likely from decomposition. This is a fine example of the engraving in very good condition. It measures 13" x 10 1/2" and was recently mounted in a custom acid free frame and matte. The engraving is bright and clean, no tears or repairs. The shadow in the photograph is from the fold.
