18th Century Limestone Period Louis XV Mantel

An Antique French, Period Louis XV (1723-1774), Carved Limestone Mantel – Good Antique Condition – Chipping to limestone consistent with age.
This magnificent French limestone mantel was hand carved in France during the reign of Louis XV.  Its more simplistic form of ornamentation would suggest  it was constructed earlier in his reign.  The lintel has a central scalloped  shell surrounded on either side by leaves and convex moldings gently curving to the legs.  The legs have a continuation of the convex moldings to the interior of the front.  The sides of the cuved legs have an indented center arch panel extending down to the conforming plinths.  The mantel piece conforms to the entire shape.  French mantels of this period are difficult to find and quite rare.
