Period Regence Chaise Longue
A Rare French, Period Regence (1700-1730) Caned Chaise Longue with Nine Legs – Walnut Wood – Excellent Antique Condition – replacement of caning to some areas as would be expected for its age. We believe it is from the Lorraine Region.
This elegant French Regence chaise longue has double caning on the wings (or ears) and at the curved ends and single caning on the seat and back (later replacement). Caning was first introduced during the Regence Period and was considered quite a luxury and very fashionable. The outward bowed legs, pieds-de-biche or cabriole in form and are carved with acanthus at the knees and feet. There are four on either side and three at the curved end. The back crest has a central cartouche and the curved end rail has a central floret. The arms and curved end are out-turned. Florets adorn other areas throughout.
