When Lafayette triumphantly returned to America for a tour in 1824, he was feted as a Revolutionary War hero. In his honor the Staffordshire ceramics factories back in England marked the event by issuing many dinnerware pieces with the blue and white transfer known as "Landing of Lafayette". It pictures the flotilla of ships leading Lafayette up the Hudson River to Manhattan led by Robert Fulton's paddlewheeler Clermont with a 21 gun salute on the shore at Castle Garden in the Battery. The scene is a charming piece of American folk art. This is the one Staffordshire transfer that is universally admired and collected throughout the country. It can be found on all sorts of plates, platters, bowls, etc. but the pitchers are among the hardest to find. This impressive example is in superb condition with bright sharp transfers and we are pleased to be able to offer it. We have several other pieces in inventory so please contact us for a complete listing.
