Rare Japanese Smoking Set

A rare museum-quality Japanese lacquer smoking set in carriage form with twined handle and flowing tassels executed in Japanese silver. Finely decorated in muted tones of gold in high and low relief lacquer work, the elegant Heian-style carriage has wheels on both sides with a single drawer on its front with silver floral pull. The handles, tassels and silver containers with removable covers are engraved with the character “jungin” (pure silver) – the silver brazier with opening for lighting the pipe and the slender silver receptacle for tamped ashes. Height, 7"; width, 11.25"; depth, 4.75". Meiji Period.
