Charles Jacque was born in Paris in 1813 and initially apprenticedto an engraver of geographical maps at age 17. A bit disillusionedwith the engraving trade and the conditions, he enrolled in thearmy for seven years and executed a drawing, later to becomea drypoint engraving. He traveled to England and engravedillustrations for Shakespeare's works and a history of Greece. Hetraveled to Burgundy, site of his family, and later settled in Paris.His artistic career began in 1845 with exhibitions at the ParisSalon, first with engravings and then with paintings. He wasawarded numerous prizes and medals and in 1867 was decoratedwith the Légion d'Honneur. His works are in virtually every majormuseum in France and others in the finest museums in Europe.His paintings of sheep and landscapes are among the finest ofthe Barbizon School.
