A Figured Mahogany late Sheraton Secretary Essex County, c.1810

This is an interesting secretary retaining its original first surface, which over the years has turned a warm golden color and patina. Athough, at first glance, one might consider this an Empire secretary, it has many elements of earlier and current styles. For example, it has its original swan's neck pediment with original brass buttons reminiscent of Hepplewhite and Sheraton secretaries of the time. Also, this is true of the window configuration popular at the time as are the beautifully carved classical columns and highly developed leafage above vigorously turned feet that all speak of its Essex County domicile.

The desk doesn't have a simple flap for writing, but the fold-out writing board with storage for much paperwork makes this somewhat more special. Also, note the dovetails at the end of the desk, as it indicates the level of quality throughout. The brasses, we believe, are period and all construction is complete and original.

Height: 70 1/2 in. Width: 36 in. Depth: 20 in.
