A Queen Anne Fan Carved Maple Bonnet-top High Chest of Drawers

This highboy is interesting in that it is an interpretation of the famous Boston/Salem highboys that incorporate pilasters into their design. This is a very desirable feature, and elevates the casepiece to a higher order. A highboy related to this item is illustrated in the Franklin Estate , and another courtesy of Winterthur. A Leigh Keno advertisement shows a nearly identical highboy, identified as being from Connecticut River Valley. Comparisons of the stylized pilasters show the same rare design form.

We feel it is of Connecticut, and of early construction specifically regarding the drawer bottoms, which run from front to back. The secondary is almost entirely of Eastern white cedar. This highboy retains its original brasses and finials.

This highboy has a most beautiful presentation with the fluted columns and large scale fans that give it a sense of importance and stylistic refinement. The legs are beautifully sculpted with elegantly carved circular corner blocks.
