A Set of Seven Rosewood Grained Gilt Fancy Chairs, New York, c.1835,

This set of fancy chairs is finely developed throughout with beautiful gilt stenciling contrasting with strongly figured rosewood. The crest rail, seat rail, and anterior stretcher are embellished with foliate motifs  and the lyre-form backsplat is likewise developed with an elaborate stenciled lyre  above a support rail with further leafage. The tightly turned supports below the scroll-form arms add another level of detail and craftsmanship to the armchair of this superb set.

It is truly rare to find all the above in surviving set of 7 chairs, and to also all find such in a fine condition with original stenciled elements is special indeed.

These fancy chairs are reputedly originally owned by John Ruggles, U.S. Senator from Maine, 1835-41.
