A Cherry Queen Anne Lowboy, New York, c.1760

This is a finely crafted lowboy with excellent lines. Note the dramatic cabriole legs which extend out to bold pad feet. The top is composed of strongly figured cherry with a finely chamfered edge (see below). Note that these tops were always pegged to the case, which of course, is also true of the legs. Typical of early New York furniture, it is overbuilt in terms of the size of stock used, seemingly to last for generations, and compared to English models, probably weighs more than twice as much.

Note the close-ups on the drawers. They are robustly dovetailed in the early large style and heavy rosehead nails are clearly evident with excellent oxidation around them and the wood. Note the top of the drawer sides are shaped and finished in a beaded round evidencing the quality finish work of a craftsman proud of his skills. Also, an interesting feature is the very large rosehead nails in the back. This piece retains its original brasses which is quite rare, and the interior construction is untouched. It has been cleaned and French polished.
