Details:
Charles James Lewis was born in Chelsea in 1830 and by 1852 had begun exhibiting at the Royal Academy, which he continued to do until his death in 1892. In 1882 Lewis was honoured by being elected to the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Lewis was a popular artist who depicted intimate and jolly rural scenes with exacting detail. The influential ART JOURNAL said of Lewis, when publishing his work in 1869, “We are pleased to meet with something which breaks the monotony of what is ordinarily set in front of us…… both in the subject and the treatment we have an attractive work”
