A Mahogany Neoclassical Open Armchair, Boston, circa 1830

A neoclassical open armchair, Boston, circa 1830. Vigorous acanthus carving defines this chair which is fully developed along the top of the chair stiles in additon to the bottom and top of arm supports as well as on the scrolled arms. This chair is further embellished with rosettes and has carved and turned front legs all of which are supported on its original casters.

This open arm chair probably served in a library or gentleman’s office. While the scale is grand, the form is highly developed along classic lines with the finest choice of woods and unsurpassed carving. As an aside, and of functional interest is that this chair was obviously designed by someone who understood the positive function of lower back support and is extremely comfortable.

Height: 42 1/2 in. Width: 25 1/2 in. Depth: 20 in.
