A Classical Carved Mahogany Card Table, New York City, 1830, labeled Edward Holmes

This mahogany card table is supported by two balanced columns on circular plinths, both of which are supported by four elaborately carved hairy paw feet. The top is composed of highly figured mahogany as is the apron. This is a relatively austere and strong representation of the classical form in both balance and clean form, all of which is offset with remarkable carved paw feet which are carved in an individualistic mode including scrolled acanthus leafage.

This table bears its original elaborate label and papered lining. Documented examples are rare and this is an especially different card table of truly classic form. This table is illustrated in plates VIII and VIIIa of Erik Rini's May 2005 Antiques Magazine Article, Edward Holmes & Simeon Haines: Cabinetmakers in Empire New York City.
