Monumental Figured Mahogany Classical Dressing Mirror, with Gothic Panels, New York, c.1840

This is a very tall dressing mirror, however, no wider than most. It exhibits the finest craftsmanship and mahogany available at the time. The decoration is quite restrained, however, detail is executed at every point, for example, just below the urns on top of the standards that hold the mirror are panels that have mahogany banding around flame. While this subtle embellishment may be gilding the lily, it's an example of the standard of quality this dressing table sets. The Gothic arch panels flanking the main drawers suggest a Gothic piece, but the arch motif is very subtle and ultimately subservient to a strong Classical columnar presentation. The feet are typical of those done by companies such as Meeks and Sons, New York and comes somewhat after the paw foot era. This piece would have certainly fit into the early New York townhouses of the time.

The condition is superb, with no repairs or alterations, and in fact, was found in New York.
