This pastoral genre work is an example of English Victorian painting. The subject portrays children of the working class, rather than more traditional depictions of English nobility. The children are painted in a rural setting as they rest from their labors. The artist’s honest representation of the figures and the intensley luminous and rich color palette celebrate and romanticize the common class.
